In Factory Transport [Warehousing/port services]

As the prime contractor for yard logistics for a steel mill, we offer efficient transportation by using four different lines.

We are striving to provide low-cost optimum logistics service as the prime yard logistics contractor at steel mills of Sumitomo Metal Industries. Yard transport is roughly divided into four different lines, i.e. materials, products, tracks, and maintenance. Firstly, the materials line is responsible for transporting materials as used in the upstream process at steel mills, e.g. coke, coal, and ores, recovery of scraps produced in factories in the downstream process, and feeding of scraps into a steel-making process. Here, separable special vehicles, e.g. FS carriers, F roll carriers, large trucks of various types (10-ton, 20-ton), quicklime carriers, ferro-alloy carriers, powder lorry, vacuum vehicles, etc. are used here. Secondly, the products line does the warehousing, moving to the port, and factory-to-factory transfer of the products as manufactured in factories, and also transport of rolls and machinery parts as used in factories. Main machines used here include separable vehicles like porters, full-tractors, trailer pallets, semi-tractors, and ram lifts.

We also own diesel locomotives to travel in a railway network in the yard of steel mill, of which a total length is some several tens of kilometers.

Thirdly, the track system is responsible for railways in steel mills since the train system is playing an important role in a steel mill. Especially, the one in Kashima has a railway network of some several tens of kilometers in total length. Manned (remote controlled) diesel locomotives transport molten steel, while unmanned diesel locomotives transport molten steel and shaped steel. Lastly, the maintenance system. In steel mills, we own over 1000 vehicles, containers, and pallets. We have a maintenance shop to ensure a speedy maintenance and servicing of our own vehicles including diesel locomotives. Among the vehicles and pallets operating in the premises of a steel mill, there are many built to our special specifications to integrate our original ideas. We are driving many focuses so we can contribute to the stable operation of a steel mill with an improved efficiency in yard transport.

We driving many focuses to be friendly to the environment in the premises of a steel mill. Washing and cleanig of road surfaces with a road sprinkler is one example. Also, individual drivers are keeping busy with their own initiative to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 by doing away with idling on the road.

Column2Maintenance shops and maintenance skill contest

Our maintenance shops that do the inspection and maintenance of our owned vehicles are also providing maintenance for MOT test as a service available outside of the company. Also, many different focuses being implemented to upskill workers at all workplaces. A skill contest is held for drivers. We have been producing contestants in a national driver contest almost every year, and some of them basked in glory after winning the second prize in the national contest.
